My Most Favourite Vintage Dress xXx

I am very excited as today’s creation is my first post made on We Sew Retro! I thought it a very appropriate first post as this dress is not only made from a vintage pattern, but is my most favourite vintage inspired creation I have made to date :D I never take it off.

This is me loving my dress :D

I used a vintage Vogue pattern 5028 which I have dated back to 1960.

You may recognise this pattern as it is the same bodice I used on my recent Interview Dress

Which do you think turned out best? I think this one :D

It is the adorable ruched sleeves that made me fall in love with this pattern, they are so flattering and easy to sew.

As you can tell, I haven’t used the original skirt part of the pattern, instead I added a gathered rectangle skirt I drafted myself.

As for the fabric, would you believe this was sourced from curtains that my Nan gave to me!

    • Thank you D
Most of the fabric I use for dressmaking is sourced from bedding, but curtains tend to be more expensive, so when I was offered this fabric I just couldn’t turn it down and it worked so perfectly for the pattern. Where do you source fabric from?

      • Like you, I have used linens like tablecloths, ect. I have a little shop here in OKC called Bad Grannies. There’s a lot of different crafters & vendors- there’s one booth that sells vintage patterns, sewing books, buttons, and fabrics that she gets at estate sales. She sells most for only a couple bucks a years- that’s where most of my vintage fabric has been coming from lately. My next dress on the blog will be comepletely vintage material & notions.

    • Hi :D I am so glad you like it. I didn’t have to alter the bodice pattern at all, to be honest I am not a big fan of doing that anyway, but I did add a different skirt than the original pattern called for. It was such a lovely project to sew up xXx

  1. Those sleeves are simply perfect. I love both dresses – the vintage and the interview. Just found you from the Gillian dare. I would say I’m going to add you to my reader, but….. g

  3. Somehow I missed this post, Hannah! So sorry. I must say, I absolutely love the dress (but even more so, the gal in it). You have such a classic elegance about you and this dress brings it out all the more. Only you could take curtains and turn it into a charming dress like this! Beautiful work, friend! That last photo of you in the green cardigan with a knowing glance is my favorite. Or should I say, favourite!

    • Sorry for the slow reply , and I am super glad you like my dress. Classic elegance huh – I like the sounds of that :D
If you are getting into sewing I would strongly suggest you consider using bedding and curtains as fabric. It is so much cheaper and there are so many options.

PS – I didn’t spell favourite wrong, that is just how we spell it :D
